Abstract
This article tells about the amazing work of Vladimir Dahl - a sailor, doctor, military surgeon, close friend of Pushkin. Not in the quiet of his office, but in the midst of battles and battles, he bit by bit collected the words, expressions, turns of Russian speech, in order to create his famous «Explanatory Dictionary of the Living Great Russian Language» and pass on from generation to generation the great treasures of Russian folk art. The article presents materials on the dissemination of the first educational ideas in the middle of the 18th century.
